Riri Williams is the new Iron Man

Tony Stark is stepping out of his suit for good and someone else is stepping in.

Riri Williams will be a black female Iron Man, with natural hair! Riri Williams enrolled in MIT at 15 and built her own Iron Man suit in her dorm. This, of course, grabbed the attention of Tony Stark. She still isn’t sure if she will keep the Iron Man name though.

Writer Brian Michael Bendis says, “One of the things Tony does to distract himself from all the things going on in his life is he goes to find this young woman who is flying around the middle of America in an armor that’s not completely made, to try to find out what her deal is.”

The new Invisible Iron Man series is Marvel’s attempt to diversify their cast of characters by having people of color and women be their star heroes. Riri Williams is joining Kamala Khan as the Pakistani American Ms. Marvel and Jane Foster as the female Thor. Bendis creates these characters, like Jessica Jones, Miles Morales, and Maria Hill because he is “inspired by the world around me and not seeing that represented enough in popular culture.”

Of course there is going to be some blow back. People are mean on the internet and they don’t like to keep it to themselves. People were, and still are, up in arms when Miles Morales was introduced as the new Spiderman. The new Ghostbusters is doomed before the actual release because they are all female.

Even though there are negative comments out in the air now, the majority of people will appreciate the diversity. Young boys and girls of different diversities will now grow up with heroes that look like them. That is the most important thing, representation.

Honestly, Marvel does have a lot of work to do to keep fans after the whole Nazi Captain America thing.
